Paediatric ophthalmology is a specialised branch within the field of ophthalmology. Children have different need from the adults. Their ocular problems are also very different from that of adults.
Most common Paediatric eye problems include
- Refractive errors: to put it simply it means glasses. In fact all the children at birth have got a high level of refractive error. Nothing to worry;over 80 percent of these children overcome this by the age of 5 years.Different modalities are used to evaluate children. Generally paediatricians advise an eye check up at the age of 1 year, 3 years and just before the child is enrolled in school.
We at Perceptions Vision Center are trained, especially to evaluate a child who does not speak. We use different internationally acclaimed tools designed especially for eye examination for children.
- Amblyopia: This essentially means a lazy eye. It means that either of the eye does not work upto its full potential as compared to the other eye. At perceptions vision Center we help to detect the problem eye and help in vision therapy for better vision in the affected eye.
- Squint: Squints or strabismus are very very common in children. At perceptions vision center we give the best possible treatment for squint which includes vision therapy or if required surgery.
- Allergic conjunctivitis: This is very common in young children and leads to frequent irritation and itiching of the eyes. At Perceptions vision center we ensure optimum treatment for allergic conjunctivitis.
- Retinopathy of prematurity: This condition is seen in pre term babies and also low birthweight babies. In this condition the babies retina is not completely developed. It is very important that we examine these babies and detect problems at the earliest.
